Snapshot

Born in Brighton, Lloyd Russell-Moyle worked for educational charities including the National Youth Agency; the Woodcraft Folk, which he chaired; and became the vice-president of the European Youth Forum. Russell-Moyle first stood for parliament in 2015, unsuccessfully contesting Lewes. The following year, he was elected to Brighton and Hove City Council. After being elected an MP, Russell-Moyle joined the International Development Committee and the Committees on Arms Export Controls. During the heated Brexit discussions at the end of 2018, he attracted attention by grabbing the House of Commons mace and attempting to walk out with it; an act he described as a “symbolic stunt” to protest a “rotten parliament”. Russell-Moyle was one of 13 Labour politicians to stage a protest on Westminster bridge called “Love Socialism, Hate Brexit”. He is openly gay and strongly supports LGBT+ causes, recalling his “fear of being LGBT” when growing up and coming out as HIV positive in 2018. Russell-Moyle has chaired the APPGs for Rojava, Kurds in Iran, and Youth Affairs. In 2020, he had two brief shadow minister roles for East Asia, Pacific, Americas and the Overseas Territories and then for natural environment and air quality.
