Snapshot

Aged just 24 when elected to West Bromwich East, Nicola Richards became one of the youngest MPs in the Commons and a part of the new look, younger contingent of Conservative MPs. A die hard West Midlands resident her whole life, Richards studied Political Science at Birmingham before embarking on a period of work which set her up for her run for Parliament. Alongside her role as a councillor – dating back to May 2015 and the end of her penultimate university year – Richards worked in Margot James’s constituency office, and for the Conservative party as West Midlands Mayor Andy Street’s content creator. She also worked in public relations for the Jewish Leadership Council, and the Holocaust Educational Trust. When elected in 2019, her majority was 1,593. Richards has been a member of the Committee on the Future Relationship with the European Union and the Women and Equalities Committee since March 2020. She is a vocal supporter of transgender rights and in August 2020, she co-authored an article in ConservativeHome with fellow MP Alicia Kearns which called on the government to reform the Gender Recognition Act 2004.
