Snapshot
Christina Rees was elected as the Labour and Co-operative MP for Neath in 2015. She is a qualified barrister and first stood for elected office in the 2011 Welsh Assembly elections as the Labour candidate for Arfon, as well as in the 2014 European elections, but was unsuccessful. In the 2015 general election, Rees stood as the Labour candidate for Neath after the incumbent Peter Hain, himself a former Welsh secretary, stood down. Soon after her election, she joined the Justice Committee and the Welsh Affairs Committee. In October 2016, following the re-election of Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader, she was appointed as shadow justice minister (a position she quit following the EU referendum) and also served as shadow Welsh secretary. In February the following year, she became shadow Welsh secretary. She has chaired the All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) on Sepsis and on Vegetarianism and Veganism (Rees is vegan herself) and co-chaired the APPG on Public Legal Education and Pro Bono. Rees was re-elected in 2019 but saw her majority halved to 5,637. She currently sits on the Consolidation and Bills Joint Committee and the Panel of Chairs.
