Snapshot

Foreign Secretary and first Secretary of State, Dominic Raab, is the MP for Esher and Walton. After reading Law at both Oxford and Cambridge, Raab was taken on as a trainee solicitor by Linklaters LLP. Moving on from the firm in 2000, Raab joined the Foreign Office, working in a range of posts, including leading a team at the British Embassy in the Hague. During this time, Raab defended Tony Blair, who was facing a subpoena from the former president of Yugoslavia. From 2006-2010, Raab worked as chief of staff for David Davis followed by Dominic Grieve. At the 2010 general election, Raab held Esher and Walton for the Conservatives. After his election, he joined the Human Rights Committee, and in 2013 moved to the Education Committee. Raab co-authored the book ‘Britannia Unchained’ during this parliament alongside a number of his colleagues, including Priti Patel and Liz Truss. Following the 2015 general election, Raab became a parliamentary under-secretary at the Ministry of Justice, holding the post until Theresa May became prime minister. Raab joined the Vote Leave campaign in 2016. Following the 2017 general election, Raab became justice minister and then housing minister the following year. He secured a long-awaited promotion in 2018 when he replaced David Davis as Brexit secretary when Davis resigned over Theresa May’s Chequers proposal in July that year. Raab served in the post for just four months before himself resigning over Theresa May’s draft withdrawal agreement. Raab was appointed by Boris Johnson as foreign secretary and first secretary of state in July 2019.
