Snapshot

Originally from the South East, Kate Osbourne had lived in North East England for over 30 years when she was elected an MP for Jarrow in 2019, with a majority of 7,120. Before her election, she worked for 25 years at Royal Mail where she became a representative for Unite the Union. Her left-wing activism has also seen her serve as a member of Unite’s executive council and as a union representative on Labour’s National Constitutional Committee – the party’s highest disciplinary body. At the time of her election, she was serving as a North Tyneside councillor. Her selection caused some controversy when it emerged she had shared a meme on social media that showed Theresa May with a gun pointed at her head. Osbourne “unreservedly” apologised for the post and said she deleted it once she realised it had “caused offence.” She is also known for her activism in the LGBT+ movements. Her wife is Pamela Brooks, a former North Tyneside councillor: the couple served on the council at the same time and for four years, were both representatives for Preston ward. In the 2020 Labour leadership election, Osborne nominated Rebecca Long-Bailey.
