Paul Maynard has had an impactful career within the Conservative party. Prior to becoming an MP, Maynard was an advisor to Liam Fox and a speechwriter for William Hague .Maynard is the second MP to have cerebral palsy and the first to have attended a special educational needs school. He has actively advocated for those with disabilities, including campaigning for improved access to apprenticeships and for people with learning disabilities. Maynard’s other primary political interests include: keeping the price of fuel down; supporting Brexit; and giving young disabled people more control over policies that affect them. Maynard has been a government whip, a member of the work and pensions and transport committees, also working with the young disabled people’s APPG. Maynard was appointed as parliamentary under-secretary of state for justice in May 2019. In 2012, he was voted Wesminster’s Charity Champion for the difference that his work had made in the lives of young disabled adults. In 2019, Maynard was relocated to the Department for Transport, taking on responsibilities as parliamentary under-secretary of state, a position he held until 2020.
