Snapshot

Antony Higginbotham was another Conservative to break through Labour’s “red wall” in the 2019 general election. He took Burnley on a swing of 9.7 per cent, becoming the first Conservative to represent the area since 1910. Higginbotham was born and raised in Rossendale, and whilst at school became involved with Lancashire’s army cadet force. After studying politics, he began a career in the NHS before completing a graduate diploma in law and beginning a career in financial services in 2014. He worked for a trade organisation, representing international banks in London to access global markets. In this role, Higginbotham advised major banks on post-financial crisis reforms, working to ensure future sustainability. He later worked at a Japanese bank and at NatWest, advising on Brexit issues. Higginbotham’s campaign promises included delivering the 2016 EU referendum result, investing in public services and supporting local businesses in Burnley, particularly focusing on his constituency’s urban centres. He is a member of the Committee on the Future Relationship with the EU, and is interested in negotiating Britain’s free trade relationships with the rest of the world. Higginbotham is one of 20 LGBT+ Conservative MPs.
