In undeniably extraordinary circumstances, Kate Griffiths succeeded her husband as MP in their shared constituency. Andrew Griffiths served his constituency for nine and a half years, but was exposed in a sexting scandal in 2018: it was revealed that he had sent over 2000 sexually explicit messages to two women over three weeks. The couple subsequently divorced and the whip was removed from him. He was then pressured into stepping down as an MP by his local Conservative association. Griffiths (Kate) increased her husband’s majority by over 4000 votes. Griffiths courted slight controversy in a Facebook post she published, claiming she voted to leave in 2016. This was questioned by critics pointing to a photo showing her posing with her husband who was wearing a “Conservatives in” t-shirt. Griffiths maintained that she voted to leave. Prior to this saga, Griffiths was a corporate hospitality coordinator. She stood for election highlighting issues such as local high street investment and painting herself as an advocate for domestic abuse survivors. Griffiths is a member of the APPG on domestic violence and abuse.
