Efford began his career in the Labour party as councillor for Greenwich, where he became the Labour group chief whip in 1990. After being elected to the Commons, Efford held a number of positions including sitting on the Procedure, Transport and Communities and Local Government committees, as well as becoming parliamentary private secretary to housing ministers Margaret Beckett and John Healey in 2008. Efford supported Ed Miliband’s successful bid in the 2010 Labour leadership election and joined his shadow team, initially as shadow Home Office minister and later shadow minister for sport. He nominated Corbyn to be Miliband’s successor in 2015, retaining his shadow cabinet position, however was amongst the large number of Labour front bench resignations in June 2016, also supporting Owen Smith’s failed leadership attempt in 2016. In 2017, Efford was behind the relaunch of the Tribune Group of Labour MPs, seeking to reconnect with traditional centrist Labour voters. He currently sits on the Public Accounts and Digital, Culture, Media and Sports committees, as well as the Panel of Chairs.
