Snapshot

Jack Dromey was born and raised in North West London and in his early life was heavily involved in the trade union movement, being elected as chairman of his local branch of the Transport and General Workers Union in the early 1970s. He helped to organise several campaigns including the occupation of Centre Point. He rose through the ranks of the union and became deputy general secretary. Dromey was also active within the Labour Party at this time, serving on its National Executive Committee and held the post of treasurer between 2004 and 2010. As treasurer, he claimed to be unaware of the national Cash for Peerages scandal. Soon after his election, Dromey joined the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee and the Regulatory Reform Committee. He served on Ed Miliband’s frontbench as shadow minister for communities and local government, then as shadow policing minister and labour minister. He nominated Lisa Nandy in the 2020 Labour leadership race and is married to Harriet Harman. Since 2018, Dromley has been shadow minister for work and pensions. Dromley co-chairs the APPG on manufacturing and is vice-chair of the APPG on hospice and end of life care.
