Snapshot

Stephen Doughty spent his early career working in Denmark, after which he became an adviser to Labour MP Douglas Alexander. He later worked in a range of campaigning roles at charities such as World Vision and Oxfam, becoming head of Oxfam Cymru in 2011. Doughty also worked with Make Poverty History and the Robin Hood Tax campaign. In parliament, he was opposition whip and shadow trade minister. From 2015, he became shadow foreign minister for Africa, South Asia and international organisations. Later that year, he called the police due to heavy criticism from constituents and activists via social media triggered by his support of the airstrikes in Syria. In 2016, he resigned from the shadow cabinet live on Daily Politics. The Labour Party deemed this unacceptable and implied it to be a breach of the BBC’s role and statutory obligations. Doughty tweeted that he had resigned “shortly before I did the interview so there was not time for spin doctors to start smearing me”. He chairs the APPG on HIV and is an advocate for LGBT+ rights, concerned about conversion therapy. In 2020, he was appointed shadow minister for Africa and international development.
