Snapshot

Steve Double worked in a bank, church and charity before becoming a councillor and briefly mayor of St Austell. Double has been chair of the ocean conservation APPG since 2014, being passionate about water quality and plastic pollution issues. He is vice-chair of the APPG on air passenger duty reform as well as being co-chair of the APPG on fatherhood. He soon joined the Petitions Committee and the European Scrutiny Committee. In 2016, Double admitted having had an extramarital affair with a married 26 year old aide. In 2017, he called on the government to “put more resources into supporting marriage” expressing shock at their investment in cathedrals and churches. These facts are somewhat surprising given Double is an evangelical Christian. Despite the 2017 ban on employing family members (which is not retrospective), Double’s wife continues to be his senior caseworker. Double, a Brexit supporter, described Theresa May’s withdawal deal as a “turd of a deal, which has now been taken away and polished, and is now a polished turd. But it might be the best turd that we’ve got.” He was appointed as PSP for the DHSC in 2019.
