Snapshot

Philip Davies boasts the ranking of most rebellious serving MP, having voted against the government on over 250 occasions. He is the son of Peter Davies, former mayor of Doncaster. Davies’ career began working for Asda and for several bookmakers. He is famous for his filibustering in parliament and his campaigns against “political correctness”. Davies frequently filibusters bills introduced under the Ten Minute Rule, believing that such bills do not allow for proper parliamentary scrutiny. Davies led the now-defunct Commons caucus Campaign Against Political Correctness, and opposed positive discrimination policies in favour of “true equality”, arguing that white male cabinet ministers risk being “hoofed out” in favour of minority candidates. Davies has also spoken out against the diminishing use of stop and search powers by the police, arguing that members of targeted groups are frequently “more likely to be murderers”. Davies joined the Women and Equalities Select Committee in 2016. Since 2020, he has been on the Panel of Chairs and the online harms and disinformation sub-committee. Davies is on the governing council of The Freedom Association pressure group and an organiser for the Taxpayers’ Alliance. He is married to Esther McVey.
