Snapshot
Mims Davies, the first person in her family to go to university, is a former radio presenter, journalist and communications officer. She was a carer for her two elderly parents, which she has said was an influential experience. In 2016, she opposed a Labour motion requiring landlords to make their homes “fit for human habitation”: she was one of 72 Conservative MPs who voted likewise and derive income from rented properties. In 2018, Davies quit the Reference Group on Representation committee, citing a lack of confidence in the chair John Bercow’s ability to tackle bullying. A committed Brexiter, in 2018 Davies became an assistant government whip, then parliamentary under-secretary of state for Wales and finally minister of state for sport, civil society and loneliness. After Raheem Sterling was racially abused by supporters of Chelsea FC in 2019, Davies led calls for a zero-tolerance approach to racism and homophobia in sports. Under Boris Johnson, Davies was appointed parliamentary under-secretary in the DWP. In 2019, Davies announced she would be standing down as MP in order to spend more time with her children. However, just days later she announced her relocated candidacy.
