Snapshot

Born in 1970, Janet Daby grew up on a council estate in Greenwich with her parents who were Windrush-era immigrants from Jamaica and Guyana. As a child, her family were subject to racist attacks. In 2010, she became a councillor on Lewisham Council, an area of South East London that she has lived in for most of her life. Daby is founding director of Whitefoot and Downham Community Food Plus Project. She rose to deputy mayor of the London Borough of Lewisham. Daby was a pro-remain campaigner and a backer of the London Clean Air campaign. She is a supporter of Keir Starmer, something of a rarity amongst fellow former Corbyn supporters. Since being elected in 2018, Daby has already served on the justice and home affairs committees. From April 2020 to July 2020, she was shadow housing, communities and local government minister. In July 2020, Daby was appointed shadow minister for faith, women and equalities. She has demonstrated her passion for gender and racial equality, affordable housing and local government.
