Snapshot

Bambos Charalambous has been the Labour MP for Enfield Southgate since 2017. He is the first MP with two Cypriot parents to be elected to the Commons. Charalambous grew up in the Enfield area, and stood for parliament unsuccessfully on three previous occasions – for Epping Forest in 2005, and for Enfield Southgate in 2010 and 2015. His background is in the law; Charalambous worked for 23 years as a housing specialist for Hackney Council until his entry into parliament. Charalambous voted Remain in the 2016 referendum alongside 62 per cent of his constituents, and is now in favour of a second referendum. Charalambous was initially sceptical about Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, but says he’s been “proved wrong.” Charalambous has also been outspoken about cuts to public services, with the decline in police numbers a particular point of concern, in light of rising knife crime across Britain. “People feel that the fabric of society is falling apart, they see crime going on, they don’t see any end to it, and that is causing a lot of concern in the community,” he has said. In the 2017-2019 parliament, he sat on the Finance Select Committee, the Procedure Select Committee and the Justice Select Committee. He was re-elected in the 2019 general election with a marginally increased majority of 4,450 and nominated Keir Starmer in the 2020 Labour leadership election.
