Snapshot

After graduating from Edinburgh University in 1998, Wendy Chamberlain joined the Lothian & Borders police force as a constable and remained a police officer for twelve years before taking up a variety of HR roles in the private sector, including most notably as capability manager at the beverages multinational, Diageo. She eventually joined the Liberal Democrats in 2015 but did not win a parliamentary seat until the 2019 general election, when she wrested control of North East Fife from the SNP. A passionate unionist with a pro-independence husband, Chamberlain previously told Mace of her hopes to “[put] the issues of Brexit and independence to bed” despite her other half’s nationalist leanings. Now her party’s chief whip, she opposed the recent FCO-DfID merger and has argued strongly for ensuring future covid-19 vaccines are made equally accessible to all countries. Given her wide-ranging party duties, Chamberlain has allegedly been dubbed the Liberal Democrat who “picks up all the bits and pieces” by fellow MPs.
