Snapshot

Fiona Bruce has been the Conservative MP for Congleton since 2010. Prior to entering politics, Bruce was solicitor, specialising in wills and probate and inheritance tax planning. She founded Fiona Bruce & Co. in 1988, where remains a senior partner. In 2004, Bruce was elected as a councillor on Warrington Borough Council, where she also served as executive member for finance from 2006 to 2009. She unsuccessfully contested Warrington South in the 2005 general election. Since entering the Commons, Bruce has sat on a number of committees, including chairing international development sub-committee on the work of the independent commission for aid impact from 2015 to 2017. She is currently a member of the backbench business committee, the ecclesiastical joint committee and the human rights joint committee. Bruce is a member of the Pro-Life APPG, a role that has bought her much press attention. In 2018, Bruce described the government’s rejection of buffer zones around abortion clinics as a “win for mothers” and in November 2020, she spoke of her opposition to assisted dying, arguing that in light of Covid-19, any discussion of the matter would be “completely inappropriate—indeed, insensitive”.
